Non-Scale Victories

When losing weight, or trying to lose weight, it's very easy to get discouraged when the numbers on the scale either stop moving in the right direction or don't move as fast as we want them to.  It's these times when we need to take a step back and remember there is a lot more to losing weight than just numbers.  It's these "Non-Scale Victories" that we need to hold on to in order to keep our momentum and motivation.

I'm going to start a weekly post detailing my personal non-scale victories, to have a record to keep myself motivated.  Since I've been at this for about 3 weeks, I'll go ahead and post all of them to date now.

MY NON-SCALE VICTORIES (6/15/12-7/9/12)

~My work uniforms are fitting better. Even a slight bit loose.

~I can buckle my seatbelt again.

~I can move better. I am not out of breath after 5 minutes of standing.

~I don't have to use a chair in the shower anymore!!! I can stand on my own and take a shower again!!!

~I walked 1/4 mile today!  (equivalent to one lap around a standard track...might not seem like much to some, but that's HUGE for me!!!)

How do you keep yourself motivated?

  2. Way to Go, Becca!

I think that focusing on your NSV's is a great way to stay motivated.

I also keep myself motivated by changing things up A LOT. I change my listening habits often, sometimes I listen to an audiobook or sermon, other times I stream JOYfm, and others I put on a favorite playlist. I change my exercises, routines, time of day, etc. Sometimes I exercise alone, sometimes I go with someone else.

And for eating, I try to indulge within limits: I get one "treat" a day, but it's usually small, and I'm always on the lookout for that Point of Diminishing Returns when I'm indulging.

  4. Thanks everyone! I appreciate the support!

Kelly, I love that you posted about changing it up. I noticed that I get stuck in a giant rut when I'm dieting. Like my breakfast bowl I posted about? I have eaten that every morning for almost three weeks. I seem to find something that works and I latch onto it. I am going to focus on finding some variety this week. Thanks!!! Love you!

  5. Congrats on your non-scale victories as they are important. I so understand the non-scale victories, I have been on my weight loss journey since mid-March and haven't seen lots of movement on the scale, but have lost inches. Remember, this is a long journey...we didn't put the weight on in a few months, this took years. We are in this for the long haul and every victory no matter what should be celebrated. I know people who have lost the weight very fast and most of them put it all back on and then some. Slow and steady wins the race is my motto. MFP keeps me motivated as I track daily intake, whether good or bad, and my friends help keep me on track. Seeing others lost the weight over time is so inspiring. You and I will get there in our own time...just believe!
